  16. <p>Will women soon outnumber men as victims? Is a new virus at
  17. work?
  18. </p>
  19. <p>     The Eighth International Conference on AIDS was originally
  20. scheduled to be held in Boston. But the organizers, angered by
  21. a U.S. policy prohibiting entry by people infected with HIV, the
  22. AIDS virus, moved it. So it was that more than 11,000
  23. scientists, policymakers and activists trooped to Amsterdam
  24. instead to exchange the latest information:
  25. </p>
  26. <p>-- Doctors reported more than two dozen cases of AIDS-like
  27. symptoms in patients who test negative for HIV. The cause is
  28. unknown: it could be a new version of HIV (two are already
  29. known) or an evolved form of an existing one. It could be a
  30. completely different sort of virus. It could even be some sort
  31. of bacterium, or perhaps an environmental factor. Scientists
  32. believe they have already isolated a new virus in patients with
  33. this mock AIDS, but their work needs to be confirmed. Such a
  34. virus could contaminate blood supplies undetected, but because
  35. scientists could develop new blood tests quickly, the danger is
  36. minimal.

  38. <p>-- Experimental vaccines designed to slow or stop the
  39. progress of AIDS in infected people are showing promise in
  40. several trials. But vaccines to prevent the disease in healthy
  41. people are much farther off.
  42. </p>
  43. <p>-- The AIDS epidemic is at least partly to blame for a new
  44. strain of tuberculosis that is extremely resistant to
  45. antibiotics; the diseases seem to progress much faster in
  46. patients who have both at the same time. Unlike AIDS,
  47. tuberculosis is highly contagious.
  48. </p>
  49. <p>-- Women are now catching AIDS almost as fast as men, and
  50. by the year 2000 they will make up the majority of victims. One
  51. reason: in many societies, women have no influence on their
  52. husbands' sexual behavior and cannot force them to wear
  53. condoms.
